I found that setting the highest level of motor support and dropping down a gear or two, making the pedals easier to push, made hill climbs much easier overall. The torque sensor is great, the driving feels far more naturel then our cadence powered ebikes. With the previous ebikes i would slowly fall behind because of our weight difference (+-30 Kg). No more! We can drive next to each other and keep the same pacing effortlessly. If you have a long commute, you’ll probably need a speedy, efficient ride; while a cruiser may seem nice, you’ll want something with a little more power. Depending on how far you commute, you’ll also want to make sure your bike has a battery big enough to get you both ways on a single charge. Several other factors can also affect the riding range of an e-bike.Despite its limitations, the ADO Air 20 certainly seems to have a niche here. It offers decent value and should prove a nice, useful, low maintenance folder for the right person. A lighter-framed bike will be suitable if you want to commute at a reasonable speed or need to carry your commuter upstairs or down the subway. I bought a cheap velcro strap online and used this to hold the bike together in its folded state; it made the A20 far easier to carry around, particularly when getting it on and off the Tube. Holding the frame together made it more stable on its rest, and the folding pedals keep out of the way. The ADO A20 uses a brushless internally geared rear hub motor – these motors are designed to be small, lightweight and efficient. This proven technology is likely to provide a long service life with minimal reliability issues. The three assistance levels are nicely calibrated too. The manual suggests they cut out at different speeds, but I didn’t find that to be the case. Even in level one, the motor contributed all the way up to 25km/h – it just wasn’t doing quite as much as in either of the two higher levels. Here at ebiketips we tend to think that’s a better way of setting up an e-bike than having lower assistance levels that are only there for riding at 15km/h or whatever.
If you aren’t bothered by the legality issue and are willing to take the risk, that’s your choice. I would personally advise against it, but if you do choose to ride one of these on the road, always ride sensibly, be respectful and don’t draw attention to yourself (and remove the throttle). Big hills are a little different. With the GoCycle G4, the torque sensor and boost button let you operate at maximum support to glide up hills. Hills can feel like more effort than on the G4, although I should point out that I could still climb the steep hill outside of Epping at more than 20km/h – which is way faster than I’d manage on leg power. If you’re a lighter rider, you’ll get more out of it and you could add a chunk to that in warmer weather as well, but it’s hard to envisage anyone getting close to 100km. The ride If you want to ride through any problematic terrain, get a bike with traction and power to help you get over it safely and efficiently. To use the bike in electric mode, you have to insert the provided key and turn it to the on position. The key is a little hard to insert, since cables run around the slot, which you can’t see as it’s located under the frame. It’s also very easy to bend a key, especially if you leave it inserted while folding or unfolding the bike.
