Billy was separated from his sister Mary following the death of their parents and left in the care of their uncle Ebenezer, his father's half-brother. Before you start scratching your head over that last one, I should mention that Hill Marvel called himself “Hill Billy” (read it aloud) when he wasn’t transformed. The Lieutenant Marvels really embraced the concept until Crisis on Infinite Earths revamped the Shazam Family history. Since then, the Lieutenant Marvels have been mentioned and briefly seen as Easter eggs, but otherwise they’ve remained in limbo. If Shazam!– one of the best superhero movies– was about finding a place and family to call home, Fury of the Gods focuses on the foster siblings’ insecurities about growing older and losing everything they hold dear. They’re teenagers now and their superhero-based responsibilities mean they’re growing up faster than the average youngster would. Even so, as adolescents trying to figure life out and find their non-superhero places in the world, they don’t have all the answers. This creates individual and collective frustration in and among our heroes.

A sequel to Shazam! began development shortly after its release in April 2019, with Gayden returning as writer, and Morgan joining soon after to revise Gayden's screenplay. Sandberg and Levi (Shazam) were also set to return by that December.
