About this deal

The NVMe protocol – short for non-volatile memory express – was created to make the most out of solid state drives in combination with the PCI-Express (PCIe) interface. It replaces AHCI (paired with SATA), which was originally designed for mechanical hard drives. The newer protocol includes many efficiency improvements to deal with parallel transfers and the low-latency nature of SSDs. Welcome to the cutting edge! You're shopping for a kind of drive that many folks don't even realize exists. As a result, you need to pay attention to several factors that may not be documented very well while you shop. Let's recap. If you're copying a game from one drive to another or validating game files in Steam, faster NVMe drives make a difference. They can also shave off a second or two when it comes time to load a game level, but the more significant difference is against hard drives, where even a slower SATA SSD is much faster. Go beyond a certain point, and all SSDs start to feel similar. This is a bit of disappointment, not only for us, but also for the potential buyers who have already expressed some grief on forums. This change is a calculated move by Samsung, though. According to Samsung’s statistics on over 661,000 NVMe SSDs, the company says 99% of users write up to 156 TB of data within five years, and 99.7% write less than 600 TB. The Addlink AddGame A93 is a good choice for budget-conscious users looking for a high-performing general-purpose PCI Express 4.0 SSD, either as an upgrade for a desktop computer or to add extra storage space to a PS5.

The Crucial T500 is for users willing to pay a little extra to get the best PCI Express 4.0 SSD performance. At a time when many low-priced DRAM-less SSDs are hitting the market, the T500 has a full DRAM cache (as well as a top-shelf Phison controller and 232-layer TLC NAND flash), which could give it an advantage in sustained large-file transfers, as well as in use with the PS5.

YOUR PC MADE FASTER

So, while the fastest M.2 SSDs now use the PCIe 5.0 standard, Gen4 SSDs are far more common. Gen4-capable systems start with Intel’s 11th/12th-gen Core platforms or AMD counterparts based on an X570 , B550 , or TRX40 motherboard or later.

All of this leaves the minor matter of how this drive actually performs. When it comes to peak sequential throughput, the Platinum P41 is basically as fast as anything else out there, bar a few rounding errors. OK, the Samsung 990 Pro is a bit faster at 7,462MB/s for reads to the P41's 7,375MB/s. But, honestly, it's inconsequential. The same goes for writes, where almost all the top drives will do just under 6.9GB/s. Most importantly, you want to boot from your fastest drive. That means it must be able to store the OS and all of its associated files (such as caches and swap). And it’s not that much: In my early career, I worked as an editor of scholarly science books, and as an editor of "Dummies"-style computer guidebooks for Brady Books (now, BradyGames). I'm a lifetime New Yorker, a graduate of New York University's journalism program, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa.Fuel your system performance with the Crucial® T500 Gen4 NVMe® SSD. Load games up to 16% faster with sequential read and write speeds up to 7,400MB/s and 7,000MB/s (up to 1.18/1.44M IOPs random reads/writes). The T500 serves up faster gaming, video editing, and 3D rendering. Easy to install and ready for use with your laptop, desktop, or motherboard, the T500 serves up faster gaming, video editing, 3D rendering and more with up to 2TB of storage. Built with cutting-edge TLC NAND, up to a 40% performance-to-power ratio, and speeds that are 2x faster than Gen3, the T500 optimizes your system performance so it can work faster with less power. Enabled for Microsoft® DirectStorage, the T500 also supports faster renders and reduced CPU utilization for a richer gaming experience. that is, or may reasonably be considered to be, defamatory, libelous, hateful, racially or religiously biased or offensive, unlawfully threatening or unlawfully harassing to any person or entity; Details about the extent of our regulation by the Financial Conduct Authority are available from us on request.

This benchmark consists of a range of gaming-related workloads that often apply to other usage scenarios as well. Its scores are based on the average bandwidth from a range of tasks that include loading, installing, saving, moving, and recording a number of specific games. In other words, it’s not a universal proxy for overall performance but one of the better ones for consumer workloads. 1. Fastest NVMe M.2 SSD: Crucial T700 (and T-Force Z540) The latest and fastest iteration of the PCIe interface is 5.0 (Gen5), which became available with AMD’s B650 and X670 chipsets, as well as some Intel Z790 boards. There are relatively few Gen5 SSDs available at this point, but additional models will arrive throughout 2023. UL’s 3DMark Storage benchmark is a mix of gaming workloads including level loading, saving, moving/installing, and recording games. It combines these into a total, resulting in a score and an average bandwidth. The Samsung 990 PRO has so far only been beaten by Gen5 SSDs in this benchmark. By default the SSD will be in standard mode not in full performance mode, we need to select the performance and restart the PC to get high-speed transfers enabled. Thank you for your reservation.

Also, don’t confuse M.2 and mSATA, which is another, older standard. These slots may look similar on the motherboard, but they’re not compatible. M.2 SSDs may also use the SATA interface, but that doesn’t mean it’s an mSATA drive. Voila, un très bon SSD donc mais pas indispensable. A voir également dans la durée, même si les SSD samsung sont généralement assez performant en terme de fiabilité :) The difference between an SSD and a hard drive regarding user experience is clearly noticeable. To date, the effect of shifting from one type of SSD to another is not nearly as dramatic, at least when it comes to gaming.

SK Hynix is the world’s second-largest memory chip manufacturer (after Samsung). It is however only recently that the company has started to sell consumer products under its own brand name. This should not be taken lightly by the competition, as the Platinum P41 is clearly one of the best M.2 SSDs to date. Of course, SK Hynix isn't new to this space, but the new P41 is arguably the brand's first tilt at a truly high-end M.2 drive. The old SK Hynix Gold P31 was a bit of a clunky old thing, limited as it was to the PCIe 3.0 interface and a controller chip with a mere four memory channels. The new Platinum P41? It's got it all.

As we discuss in our parallel roundup, The Best M.2 Solid-State Drives, M.2 drives are differentiated by a four- or five-digit number listed in their names or specifications. The number is a measurement in millimeters, with the first two digits being the drive's width and the remaining two or three digits telling you how long it is. The key thing to remember about M.2 is that it is a form factor, a shape. The bus—the data pathway over which the data travels to and from an M.2 drive—is distinct from M.2 itself and can vary. And it can make all the difference.
