About this deal

When Yazmina, a young Afghan from a remote village, is kidnapped and left on a city street pregnant and alone, Sunny welcomes her into the café and gives her a home — but Yazmina hides a secret that could put all their lives in jeopardy. We celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, traditions and living cultures; and we pay our respects to Elders past and present. As these five women discover there’s more to one another than meets the eye, they form a unique bond that will for ever change their lives and the lives of many others. As this group of men and women discover that there’s more to one another than meets the eye, they’ll form an unlikely friendship that will change not only their own lives but the lives of an entire country. It also offered an insight of what it was like for those who left Afghanistan and had to adjust to life in new countries.

I guess if you are a Romance reader that enjoys a book about Western women finding true love with war camp followers of the military or learning a life lesson about advancing their own careers and usefulness without a boyfriend's love, depending on the character (except the one Western woman who is strong and principled from the start, no boyfriends, who gets killed off) while experiencing exotic sights and sounds that lightly touch their conscious minds so that sometimes they want to organize a meeting, this will be a five star read for you. That said, there were shocking parts to the story that briefly covered the horrendous treatment of women and highlighted the challenges females can face, through no fault of their own but merely the life circumstances within which they find themselves. Deborah Rodriguez did nothing less than take a paintbrush, and give the gloomy, flat picture I had in my head several lashings of fresh colour and dimension.I must say that the story caused a certain amount of tension, which meant that I stayed up late to finish it. She came all the way from America to raise money for an orphanage that could very well be a front for something sinister.

They’re frequented by people from every walk of life, from business people grabbing their morning lattes to students sipping at mochas as they type away on their laptops. As the plot evolves, Rodriguez has some of her female Western characters, Sunny's friends, visit Afghan women who are in prison with their babies incarcerated alongside them. Sphere is home to some of the world's best-loved authors and books, ranging from Jenny Colgan and Carole Matthews to Mark Billingham, Val McDermid and even Gwyneth Paltrow. Kat, Sunny’s friend from America, is wrapping up her year-long stay in the land of her birth, but is facing some unfinished business. As these women gather together and discover there's more to one another than meets the eye, they'll form a bond that will change not only their lives, but the lives of an entire country.

It is forbidden to copy anything for publication elsewhere without written permission from the copyright holder. However, I beg to differ with this statement, and I believe these five characters represent each Afghan woman who is bound by cruel rules laid out by men who feel they have the right to dictate and direct how women should lead their lives. It's evident the author has first hand knowledge of what it was like, particularly for women, to live in Kabul at the beginning of the Taliban resurgence. I’m going to be honest, when I realised that three of the five central characters were either from the US or the UK, I inwardly cringed.

It was obvious from the first page of her introduction that Wakil was only using her for money yet the author stretched out this thinner than crepe paper story till the end of the book. These chikidor are competing with another, she thought, like the schoolgirls back home with their cellphones, handbags and jewelry. He’s younger than her and her thoughts are mostly preoccupied with how different things must be for them now that they’re back in his country and why he doesn’t seem as into her as he did previously. The first two involve a doctor specialising in obstetrics and women’s health as Afghanistan has one of if not the highest rate of women dying in childbirth in the world. And lastly, the way they managed to find Yasmina’s sister towards the end of the book, without any lasting consequences or repercussions for stealing her away from people who wanted to sell her into prostitution wasn’t very credible either. and was pleased to see there is a sequel which I will read, purely to see what happens to Sunny, Yazmina and Halajan next.
