It had quite a different tone to it from the short story collections, almost to the point of feeling like a Famous Five novel in places. Crompton was so impressed with the film that she chose to turn it into the only full-length novel in the canon. Having been an avid William Brown fan when I was a child, it has been quite nostalgic collecting the whole series. Crompton's fiction centres around family and social life, dwelling on the constraints that they place on individuals while also nurturing them. William and "the Nites of the Square Table" haunt a house - the plan is complicated by fur rustlers. I think WIlliam was created with an adult audience in mind, but he obviously became very popular with children.

It follows the same pattern as the short stories and I had the sneaky feeling throughout that I had read these plots before.
