About this deal

Lots of professional finishers de-nib with just a coarse rag like Hessian, or use a bit of scrunched up brown paper. To which I should have added "and in the case of a wooden item, to re-flatten any grain that may have been raised during the application of the paint/varnish".

I use 0000 (four-noughts) wire wool (that's a grade finer than John, above) for applying the wax, but you can use a pan scourer (the green or white matty things, not Brillo pads, they are too coarse). If you just applying a liquid or solid wax, or oil, that doesnt raise the grain so does not need denibbing. The purpose of doing this between coats is to smooth down any raised grain or imperfections that have occurred from the first application.

Can a Floor Sander Drum be used with a fine grain or would this be too heavy handed and strip the finish? You can use a high grit abrasive paper like 240, 320, 400, 500, 600 grit – it doesn’t really matter - any of those will do the job – if you use a lower grit like 240 you’ll do a little bit less work but your finish will be less smooth, if you use a higher 600 grit you’ll do a little more work but have smoother finish.

This positioning, alongside our focus on sustainability and preserving the environment, resounds through all we do. It really depends of what type of de-nibbing you're doing, if it's specks of dust trapped in Osmo or Danish Oil or a wiping varnish then that's all you need. The Finishing Pad should also be used when you have applied your last coat of finish to finish the job off feeling extra smooth.I've done very little oil finishing, but with paint and varnish of any sort, on wood or metal, I find 600 grit wet n dry (maybe used wet, maybe dry, depends on the parent material) by hand wrapped around a cork block the way to go. Denibbing is the removal of “nibs” and imperfections from your finish, and it should be performed between each coat of any finish applied. Read more about the condition New: A brand-new, unused, unopened and undamaged item in original retail packaging (where packaging is applicable). Personally I like to use 400 grit, but to be honest there’s really not much in it so in my opinion it's not worth worrying about, but I wouldn't go lower than 240 grit or higher than 600.

Denibbing is a process to remove nibs -when a varnish is applied to wood the grain is raised so it feels rough when the varnish has dried -hence the need for fine abrasive (abrasive isnt made wit sand these days! Now you can apply your next coat of finish in the same way as you did before, wait for it to full dry again. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. There may be some benefit to adhesion, when you denib, but it will be limited and the second coat should be fine. It might seem counter-intuitive to be sanding a finish that you’ve just applied, so I prefer to think about it as polishing the finish that you’ve applied rather than sanding it.Sia 9214 Double Sided Pad 98x120x13mm is the standard foam double sided sanding pad for maximum flexibility. Apply the first coat of finish, and wait for it to fully dry based on the manufacturers instructions. Denibbing is a really important step in applying any finish, it helps either the adhesion or absorption of further coats and can make a real difference to your projects. Says he currently none too patiently waiting for oil to dry so that I can get another coat on today.
