About this deal

There’s some deep bits, some serious bits, lots of stories that wouldn’t be out of place at a mate’s after a few drinks, or down the pub for that matter. His experience with anxiety and panic attacks was written so well, it almost felt like he’d taken my brain and my experiences with it and written it down for me to resonate with. At the time I was struggling with my writing and how it would be received—should I be writing personal things about my sexuality? From describing his childhood, to accidental fame this read will not disappoint the"Nats what I reckon" you tuber fans or greater alternative audiences.

There was a great (albeit long-winded) section encouraging the low budget weekend getaway just to get out of town and see somewhere new. I didn't know much about him prior and assumed he had a background as a chef, but he grew up in church, dropped out of school, was fired from countless jobs for mucking around or being lazy, spent 6 years as a stoner on the dole, travelled a bit as a musician and broke into stand-up after developing a YouTube following for a segment where he walks around with a tiny microphone and makes fun of things. Filled with anecdotes about some of the ratbag things he's gotten up to in his life, plus a few recipes thrown in for good measure, this book is a fun read with lots of heart. Its full of swears and Australianism but it's a solid book counteracting the psudeo happyism that exist in the self health world. The rules are very insightful and are told as warts and all stories; rest assured, Nat does not hold back.Nat is the honest ratbag we love to hate because he knows where it hits hard and continues to poke us until we're begging him to stop! Nat’s debut book Un-cook Yourself: A Ratbag’s Rules For Life topped bestseller lists in its first week of release and went on to win Booktopia’s Favourite Australian Book Award of 2020 (the proceeds of which Nat donated to Beyond Blue), and was nominated for Non-Fiction Book of the Year in the Australian Book Industry Awards. Ya see, Nat's got a loud mouth and a taste for taking the piss out of stuff—it's how he lives, laughs and loves. I love that he’s not tried to package this as self help or advice, but has just written about himself and his own experiences and let people interpret whatever the fuck they like from that.

This is stuff that's simple, easy to follow and tastes delicious, like Honey B*stard Chicken, Get F*cked Roast Potatoes and Frownie Reversal Orange Chocolate Brownie. A wonderful hug in book form for anyone who's ever experienced mental health challenges and a great way to ease the pressure on life while bringing a smile to your face.

He speaks quite candidly about his physical and mental health issues and his regrets about self-medicating for so many years.

So buckle up for Nat's unrequested take on pushing back against expectations and rolling through life with some laughs and kindness like a real, righteous ratbag! By completing your purchase, you agree to Audible's Conditions of Use and authorise Audible to charge your designated card or any other card on file. He’s ran into many people over the years that have certainly hindered and not helped, but the honesty in which he tells his story is very Nat-esque. Lastly, the recipes themselves are illustrated by several local Sydney artists, and are excellent - I think comic format works really well to portray his video style, and they're still informative and easy to follow. Nat’s platform has enabled him to hold up a tongue-in-cheek mirror to antiquated cultural norms, to promote a little kindness and to have a chat about his own battle with mental health. With Nat’s nine no-nonsense rules, you’ll be on the road to being a better d*ckhead faster than you can say ‘get in the bin’ to jar sauce.

As someone who has been through a hell of a shitshow in life and who has never really fit into a mould it was kinda nice to be reassured that that’s okay. I already want to start reading this book again but it’s 1:45am so best leave the re-read for tomorrow. I have also mentioned that Audible kind of takes issue with this rather strongly, and insists on throwing suggestions my way. Un-cook Yourself and Death to Jar Sauce won the Booktopia Favourite Australian Book Award in 2020 and 2021 respectively, with Nat donating the winning proceeds each time to Beyond Blue. Now that we’ve cooked our way out of lockdown and are wondering what the hell to do next, our favorite ratbag is back – and he’s ready to teach us more about life in this thoroughly unhelpful (but maybe actually kinda helpful? In response to the craziness he was seeing when COVID-19 crashed the party, Nat waged a war against processed food and launched a no-nonsense instructional video for one of his tried and true recipes. The reviews and comments posted on this site reflect the opinions of individual posters and do not reflect the views of Cannonball Read. The important parts are that there’s loads of funny bits and a few bloody good recipes along with some smashing artwork.
