About this deal

I cut mine with a bandsaw, but if you don't have one, you could clamp the waste of the material to a workbench and use a jigsaw. My article on Finishing with Tried and True Danish Oil explains the finishing process, and it is very easy to follow. Next, place your stencil on an offcut of hardwood and draw around it. Or you could draw inside the hole of your large sheet of paper. Safety goggles& ear defenders - if you're using power tools, then wear your PPE! Also, if you're sanding lots, I recommend a dust mask to protect your lungs!

Only serious readers will understand the struggle of trying to hold a book in one hand without it constantly closing on you. This project was created as part of my 12 Days of Giftmas series and includes a how-to video you can follow along. Jump to:If you find it difficult to keep your book open with one hand or even in general then you are in the right place because we are going to share some of the best products for overcoming this annoying problem for good. The Best Products to Get For Holding a Book in One Hand A wooden thumb book holder is a fun, eco friendly project to make, and when a nice finish is applied, it looks amazing. Select a nice piece of wood and a traditional oil finish for this project and you will love the results.

There are quite a few handy gadgets you can buy to help you keep that book open while you read or attempt to multitask. But not all products and inventions are quite as functional as they may seem. Spending a fortune on a fancy book holder won’t help much if you never end up using the device. Finally, finish the thumb book holder with an oil finish. This can be Tru-Oil, Danish Oil, or Tried and True. For this project, I used Tried and True Danish Oil. Go over the entire piece and make sure that everything is very smooth. Don’t skip on this part of the tutorial. Readers with medical conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, arthritis, or muscular dystrophy find it especially hard to read their favorite books without constantly losing their place when the book accidentally snaps closed. Can you stain the wood before varnishing? Yes! Make sure it is fully dry first. Or, if you're using a coloured preservative, you'll need to let the oils soak in properly for 2 weeks prior to varnishing. A tip Cuprinol once told me! ➕More Handmade Gifts on a BudgetCombi drill or drill press - I used a combi drill to create my thumb holes, but for accuracy, a drill press is better (although not an everyday home DIYer tool!) I also rolled up some sandpaper in the thumbnail to smooth it. But a spindle sander attachment in a drill would work too! Buff the piece with Tripoli, then use the White Diamond compound. Then, buff with Carnauba Wax for a little more shine. Finally, inspect the piece for an even sheen, and touch up any spots that need it. To prevent a tear out while drilling your thumb holes, only drill until the pointy end is poking on the other side, then do it from the reverse. Or you could clamp a sacrificial piece below. Another good alternative is, of course, to switch over to ebooks that you can read on a tab or e-reader.
