About this deal

I would have to seen more about Brubeck's life and his music without the technical terms this book took. In his laudable desire to enlighten and convince, Clark describes many of Brubeck’s piano solos in detail. The only Brubeck LP we had was “Jazz Impressions of Japan,” so that was my entry point into his work. Clark reveals that the musicians were subject to an unusual set of printed “principles and aims” in which Brubeck detailed their individual roles and responsibilities with a bracing and slightly alarming clarity. This book] is that rare beast: an uncompromisingly analytical study that absorbs and entertains, illuminating both its subject and his social context.

Brubeck received America’s top arts award, The Kennedy Center Honors in 2009 (along with Bruce Springsteen), which happened to coincide with Brubeck’s 89th birthday.

All fans of Brubeck will treasure this, though if you are not a musician, the descriptions of the execution of songs and concerts will leave you lost.

The author is clearly a genuine fan and deeply knowledgeable of all of Brubecks music over the years and with this in mind be warned! Some of the data that are collected include the number of visitors, their source, and the pages they visit anonymously. The book was enjoyed all the more while playing Brubeck’s great recordings, bringing back many good memories of the ’60s. But because counterpoint was so important to the way he thought, we all latched on to that and it became important to us.In 1954 the pianist Dave Brubeck became the first jazz musician of the postwar generation to be featured on the cover of Time magazine, infuriating those who felt that this white middle-class Californian had no business taking the limelight from Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie or Thelonious Monk, the true pioneers of an essentially African American music.

Could have been great but unless you are a musician or music theorist, a great deal of this book is nearly impenetrable. I wasn’t sold on the non-chronological structure of Philip Clark’s book at first, but it grew on me. By keeping the music at the center, and interweaving the background of cultural, political and social change to illuminate the development of the music, Clark gives us a complete picture of the artist's life and work. DAVE BRUBECK: A Life in Time is about the timeless life of the inspired and inspiring jazz master Dave Brubeck.DAVE BRUBECK: A LIFE IN TIME is a biography written by author Phillip Clark that covers the music and life of Dave Brubeck; jazz pianist and bandleader best known for his 1959 album “Time Out”. To quote President Obama, as he awarded the musician with a Kennedy Center Honor: "You can't understand America without understanding jazz, and you can't understand jazz without understanding Dave Brubeck. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. The incidental discussion about time signatures, other muso's of the time, and the music label (and executive) influence on recordings produced is fascinating.
